Muskoka Adult & Youth Nature Based Mentoring Programs

Contributing to the health of local communities has always been a cornerstone in the Earth Mentorship’s philosophy and long term vision. Over the past few years we have spent a lot of time traveling North America both teaching and learning from different communities and in different eco-systems. We are proud to announce that we are bringing our experience and passion for connecting people with the natural environments they live in back to the Muskoka Community. This spring & summer we will be offering two Earth Based Mentoring Programs. One geared towards parents, educators and interested community members. The second will be a youth nature skills program. Please read below for more details on these programs.

Wild Things Youth Wilderness Camp – Aug 16 – 20, 2010

for ages 9 – 14

This summer we are excited to be expanding our mentoring programs to the local children and youthof Muskoka. Wild things Wilderness Camp will be a 5 day nature immersion day camp for kids between 9-14 years of age. It will be held near Huntsville. The goal of the camp is to help local children/youth learn about and build a relationship with the ecosystem that supports every aspect of our lives here in Muskoka. We will use ancient wilderness skills, interpretive naturalist skills, storytelling,songs, gamesand challenges to help participants deepen their relationship to and understanding of the natural world.

Some camp activities will include:

* Learning about hazards in the wilderness

* Navigation and safe travel

* Wilderness survival skills such as: shelter building, safe fire making and water purification

* Poisonous & edible plants

* Wildlife tracking and animal studies

* Wilderness crafts

* Camouflage and silent movement

* Nature observation

* Interpreting bird language

* Land/water stewardship and caretaking

Very experienced staff with unique wilderness skill sets, will lead participants out on to the landscape to explore the natural world with all their senses, passions, and curiosity.

The camp will start each morning at 9am and run until 3:30pm. Early arrival and later pick up may be available depending on the circumstances. Participants are responsible for bringing their own packed lunch and snacks.

We will end their experience with a one night “survival” camp out where they will get to put many of the skills they learned over the week to the test. The survival camp out will be held the night of 19th . On the 20th we invite parents and family members to join us for the afternoon as we celebrate all the lessons of the week and welcome our wilderness “survivalists” back from their journey.

Location: Limberlost road.

Cost: $275, includes camp out

** limited bursary money is available for participants. To apply for a bursary please e-mail us and ask for an application: chris@earthmentorship.com
